Is Black History Month Still Relevant? (Sunday 4th October)

“BHM is still relevant because we don’t get to learn about Black History in school. Having a month dedicated to it means other people get to hear about, what “we” as a people have gone through.
Note: Black History is more than just slavery.
Blacks as a people are so diverse. Carribean history is different from African history and vice versa. BHM has been boxed into just being about American slavery and how they overcame it. Black British history is slightly different. No one ever talks about the Brixton Riots or incidents, turning points and events connected to it.
It’s relevant because it’s always good to learn about different types of history other than European like the Second World War. (Hence why I did American history as a part of my degree). To be honest I can’t really think of why it wouldn’t be relevant. If the curriculum in schools changed whereby it incorporated a lot more different cultures (lets say Blacks, Whites and Asians) there wouldn’t be a real need for BHM. Because everyone would already know about it.”
