Cold Sunday evening in Hackney and you will never guess who left home without jacket (Doh!!!). Luckily from a corner in Mere Street the weather became a forgotten memory as I was reminded of the forever gripping sounds by the D Double E army.
The hypnotic light and raw bass on the beats directed my feet into a basement dwelling, which had four corners bursting with fashion, colour, recycled decorations from sign posts to stools and I was directly opposed to a set of decks. Two finesse young ladies on my right sitting on a couch playing Pro Evo (I rubbed my eyes, twice) and to my left a queue for Jerk Chicken and jellof rice. The guy with locks walks up to me and says, “Welcome to Off The Rails AW09”
I was greeted by Andre and Lawrence, who are the respective owners of D-Vision fashion label who played an instrumental part in making the event possible.
ME: What is Off The Rails AW09?
Lawrence: Well, UK designers collaborating under one roof. You got all types of artists from portrait abstract artists to photographers to fashion designers all under one roof. It provides for them and introduces them to investors. The event took place over 2 days, which is this weekend
Andre: Positive event, I mean yesterday 2 buyers from New York Niketown came in to check it out as well as someone from New Era
ME: That’s a good look, as your slogan says “Everyone has a vision” and guys seem to be sharing a powerful one. So do you feel UK collaboration events such as this are the way forward for fashion designers?
Lawrence: Yes, definitely (encouraging me to just take a look and see for myself and he is right)
Andre: You learn about new clients and how other fashion designers deal with clients. The range is diverse from High end fashion clientele to art (pointing at Will Kay) to networking, all under roof and showing creativity
ME: What are the main threats you feel UK fashion designers face?
Lawrence: Other designers perceiving you as a threat, when that is not the case. Promotion is a challenge…
Andre: …and three so many designers and not enough retailers
