Sweet Boy

I typed “sweet boy” into google and did not get any major hits correlating to what i was looking to expect from the urban dictionary. The definitions in there ranged from ” A sweet boy is one who is not rude, enjoys life, and really is a good person to be around” to “someone that listens to r’n'b, looks fresh on the level, and likes 2 sing to his girl” to “A man who exhibits homosexual/feminine characteristics, or is just a pussy in general. Taken from the urban slang for the word sweet.”

Apart from making me laugh those definitions are the premise on which this small piece is based on. I remember when growing up, the cliched choice for most males was to be (or at least want to be) a bad boy. There was a stigma attached to the words sweet boy; as one of the definitions above states a sweet boy was regarded as a pussy. I asked several people why they did not like to be called sweet boys but no one could give me a concrete response. It was just one of those things enviroment had dictated as not “cool” and everyone went along with it.

A sweet boy is someone who is polite, who takes pride in his apperance, someone who treated women better than the bad boy did and at least on the surface appeared to have respect for the opposite sex. So with all this good qualities why would anyone get offended when called a sweet boy?
