Top 12 Fashionistas of 2009

2009 has brought a whole new range of fashion trends with new faces and figures ending the decade on a high with a nice blend of expensive and reasonable priced clothing. As usual my top fashionistas are based on  those who promote high fashion with their own sense of style.

Giving 2 more places for my post from last year (READ HERE) we say goodbye to Teyana Taylor, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Victoria Beckham, Kelis and Aygyness Denn and welcome some old favourites.

Here’s the Top 12 fashionista of 2009…

Amber Rose

Amber Rose emerged onto the scene as Kanye’s latest accessory and who would have thought the fashion fused couple would last this long? Whether snapped with Kanye or not, there is no denying that Amber Rose’s style is top notch. After all, not everyone can rock a level one haircut and still look as hot as she does?

ar

Rihanna

Rihanna bounced back from her heavily publicised domestic violence ordeal and released her darkest album yet, Rated R. This new era came with even more revealing outfits and more tattoos matched with foul language, which showed that the good girl gone bad has certainly gone forever. Despite a sexed up image, 2009 saw Rihanna continue her reign as a fashionista.

ri

Cassie

Vocally, she may have a long way to go but Diddy’s sidepiece is definitely near the top when it comes to fashion. The half baldy had girls everywhere shaving off their hair, though she certainly wasn’t the first to do it, there is no dispute that she set off the half-shave fashion frenzy in 2009.

ca

Amerie

It hasn’t been a great year for Amerie in terms of her music, with numerous album pushbacks and poor sales of ‘In Love & War’ despite it being one of the best R&B releases of ‘09. Amerie’s sense of style is exquisite and her shoe game is A+ but like her music, her style tends to be overlooked. Maybe with increased celebrity status more people will give her props for the fashionista she is.

am

Cheryl Cole

With millions tuning into X Factor every week, there is no surprise that Cheryl Cole’s style was so influential in 2009. Her most notable outfits was the red military jacket she wore during her X Factor performance of her first single ‘Fight For This Love’, which soon became one of the biggest fashion trends of ’09.

cc

Vanessa & Angela Simmons

The Simmons sisters always had fabulous fashion picks making it very clear that they had Kimora Lee Simmons as an aunt. Angela’s style is more youthful and colourful whereas Vanessa prefers the grown up sophisticated look, together their style is fun and fabulous.

va

Melody Thornton

She became a regular sight at red carpet events, slowly but surely stepping out of the shadow of Pussycat Dolls frontrunner, Nicole ‘whatever her surname is’! She was always snapped wearing the latest fashion trends but made it into her own style.
mt1

Lady Gaga

We can all agree that Lady Gaga’s fame appeared to have happened almost overnight. As her fame grew, her fashion sense became even weirder. Though her style is one most people would rather not emulate, I admire the fact she isn’t afraid to push the envelope and bring the creativity back into fashion.

lg

Solange

Solange’s fashion sense is fearless and rebellious. Summer ’09 saw her bravely refuse to conform to the narrow-minded perspective of beauty highly placed on celebrity women, as she proudly chopped of her hair. When pictures first surfaced of Solange’s new hairdo, it seemed everyone had something to say about it but she made no apologies for her decision to trade in the 18” weaves for inch long natural hair.

so

Beyonce

Undeniably one of the hardest working artist in the music industry, Beyonce’s introduction of Sasha Fierce came with a style to match. Her fashion flaunts a grown up look and though her style is more laid back than her younger counterparts such as Rihanna and Cassie, her outfits are still fashion forward.

bk

Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama had all eyes on her from all over the globe as she became America’s First Lady. Her style exemplifies elegance and class. With women from around the world looking towards her as inspiration, there was no doubt her style would be significantly influential in 2009 to older, mature women.

mo

Halle Berry

Glad she brought the short hair back in ’09 coz no one rocks it better than Halle Berry. In 2009, Halle took her simplistic style to another level and refused to let becoming a mother hold her back when it came to fashion.

I <3 Amber Rose’s red kicks and grey shorts combo. I’m feeling this article and the fashionista’s especially Michelle and the Simmon’s sisters

Nice article. Some of these women really made a mark in 09 for fashion.. Rihanna & Amber rose. Gaga is definitely a mad fashionista, but she goes in when it comes to couture.
I don’t think Angela and Vanessa simmons should come in on this list though. I know they have a line and all, but their fashion is not saying much.
More fashionista’s for 09 on the red carpet i think were… Zoe Saldana, Kerry Washington. Cassie’s Shoe game was definitely hot this year!

Amber rose is a definate! Halle…. erm? From this selection of outfits, i don’t think she’s really making it on the list.
Solange looks like an elf ha ha
