Is Black History Month Still Relevant? (Thursday 1st October 2009)

“Black history month means nothing to me. The history of my heritage is not something that should be pacified for any society’s political or moral agenda. I find it ludicrous that they can sideline a history so definitive, yet proclaim they bring it into spotlight once a year. In October, society is thus satisfied that they pay suitable homage to Black people. Black history is not just about slavery, which is indeed the most popular topic to be covered in the month. Slavery is a mere fraction of Black history.
Africa heralds the origin of all world civilisations. As a black female, I am an emblem of what I choose to represent, not what society deems convenient or appropriate for me to represent. Each day I progress along the path I choose is another day that I make history with. I stand not alone in this conviction. I along with others who decide not to defined or confined by any moment in history, but live governed by a common aim to be better than we were the day before, are the embodiment of what Black history actually is. It is survival, against the odds. It is progress and adaptability” - Simi

Yes, we define ourselves and should not be defined
