Bolton 2-2 Tottenham
This fixure was advertised as Bolton being a “bogey” ground for spurs. It most certainly proved the case with Bolton many times during the fixture outperforming their opponents. The South Korean Lee was given his first start of the campaign and put it a competent performance. From such a difficult fixture Spurs have done well getting a draw, with both Spurs Croats getting their first for their club. Although they are still short in numbers at the back, this is the kind of games spurs should be winning if they are to break into the top four. They currently sit comfortably in third. Bolton’s second goal was pure brilliance and a top contender for goal of the month, although Essou-Ekotto has a lot to answer for. A few more home performances like these and Bolton will not have to be looking over their shoulder come April and May.
Burnley 2-1 Birmingham
Three points that might be worth a whole lot more come the business end of the season saw Burnley maintain a very good home record in their quest to maintain premiership status. Both teams away from the dreaded 18th position in the premier league right now, with Burnley sitting in mid table and Birmingham, 14th not too far behind them. Bowyer’s miss in the first half is one for the scrap books while Burnley’s record signing Fletcher, gets himself on the scoresheet. The season is far from over but an early surge of points like this will be helpful as Hull could testify to last year.
Niko Kranjcar
Hull 2-1 Wigan
I tipped Wigan to be the surprise package of the season, expecting more performances like the one against Chelsea last week, and a hopeful break through to premiership football for Jason Scotland. Inconsistency however is really hindering their chances of a top half of the table finish. Hull on the other hand got the precious three points that has drawn the rest of the league closer to the bottom three. J.V. of Hesselink put in a good debut performance which was rounded of with a well taken goal. Bikey also capping of his performance with a goal.
Wolves 0-1 Portsmouth
Finally Portsmouth have a victory and no one in the country can take that relief away from them. They have put in good performances in the last couple weeks, and this victory is long over-due, although on this occasion, they can count themselves lucky to get a draw; with Wolves being denied a stone wall penalty. If anyone has needed luck this season it has been them. A courageous performance by both sides. Portsmouth have not settled their off the field troubles and Avram Grant is back in the offices upstairs with a new owner. The future now looks brighter, as the fans will now be hoping for (minimum) half the fortune that Pompey had when Grant was first there.
Manchester United 2-2 Sunderland
This was probably the shock of the weekend in any league across Europe. A bad day at the office for Manchester United as they struggled to get going in this match and Sunderland, were in the mood to take full advantage. This was yet another goal keeping performance by Foster that he may want to forget; one incident leading to Jones’ goal, although it was great play by both Reid and Jones. place no harm with another well taken goal. Steve Bruce continues his rise up the managerial ladder, for hopefully a big shout for the next big job that becomes available at any of the bigger clubs (those ahead of them in the current premier league standing), with what would have been a highlight in his career, but at Manchester United, it can never be final until the final whistle has blown. A small hiccup in Manchester United’s premier league challenge and an unplanned point for a good Sunderland side.
Arsenal 6-2 Blackburn
Six different goal scorers and a performance that exhibits the football ideology that Arsene Wenger has brought to North London in the last thirteen years. At the same time Blackburn had two chances in the first half and got two goals; an aspect of Arsenal’s game that must be corrected if they are to win silverware this season. Fabregas was immense in the middle of the pitch and is reveling in his new role for the side. The young side are a couple years older, with a few old heads and the rumoured return of Patrick Vieira might prove a deciding factor in the destination of the title. The return of Walcott will also prove to bring more excitement and goals to this side. A winning performance against a top four side will go a long way in achieving what Arsene Wenger has been trying to achieve for the last four years, win a trophy with this side!
Everton 1-1 Stoke
This result further proves that Stoke are now a strong premiership outfit. A good performance but both sides and a draw was most probably the best result at the end of the day. There were a few penalty incidents in this game that both teams can lay claim to. Leon Osman capped of a good performance with a well taken goal with his weaker left foot. Cahill surprisingly missed a few headed opportunities in the box. Yakubu’s return will add to the Everton squad waiting for a consistent goal scorer.
Didier Drogba
West Ham 2-2 Fulham
Carlton Cole continues to score goals for West Ham, as West Ham struggles. Dikgacoi gets sent off on his premier league debut and both teams continue to position themselves below where they should really be in the league. Fulham will feel more distraught by the result as Stanislas stole in late to grab the hammers a draw, but both teams are good enough to turn their season around and start fighting for a place in the top ten.
Chelsea 2-0 Liverpool
Chelsea just looked the better team. They can really go on to build momentum from this victory. Everyone in the team won their individual battles. Drogba on the other hand must stop rolling round every time he comes into contact with an opposing player. It was the one repetitive act that threatened to ruin a good game. Liverpool however have a hand full of problems. The squad is not good or big enough, there are too many inconsistent performers in at the club. Carragher is not the same player he has been and Gerrard is not the immovable force he was for most of this decade; both nevertheless have been brilliant servants of the club. Cup competition once again will have to be their best bet of a trophy. Agger returning, bringing in a new winger is definitely what is needed for a successful mount on the premiership title next season.
Aston Villa 1-1 Manchester City
Both teams vying for a place in the top four. While both teams would have been happy with a draw, Villa the home team would be more upset with respect to the final whistle. Adebayor is back in the Manchester City line up, being a thorn in the defense of premiership teams. His movement creating a pass and space for the inform Bellamy to grab the eqauliser. Both teams still looking good for their challenge on the top four.
