WIGAN 3-1 CHELSEA
This was the most shocking result of the season weekend in Europe and in the season so far. Chelsea have been giving chances away but to think Martinez’ new attacking line-up would take advantage of it was not plausible. Chelsea were not at the races as was evident with the first goal, a short corner not being dealt with at all. Up the3 other end of the pitch, Drogba can do no wrong as he got on the score sheet again, for a landmark 100th goal. It was a bad day at the office for Chelsea and a revitalized Wigan took full advantage of it. Scotland, Bramble, Nzogbia and Rodallega particularly brilliant. Petr Cech should hopefully see his red card rescinded, and Ashley Cole should be fit for next weekend’s clash against Liverpool. This may be a springboard for Wigan to push up the table away from the relegation dog-fight they should be a part of.
LIVERPOOL 6-1 HULL
After a stuttering start Liverpool’s season is up and running, and they are doing all they can not to repeat the mistakes of last year. This has meant the like of Stoke and Hull are not getting a look in at Anfield. Torres on this kind of form is a nightmare for most defenders in the world yet alone a young defender making his debut and Sonko. Gerrard had a Ronaldinho (against Seaman, 2002) moment but I think the whole world knows Gerrard didn’t mean. Babel still fighting for his career at Liverpool came on to put in an efficient performance. Hull are destined for a relegation battle as they don’t know where to turn for victory. Their manager is now the favourite to be the first manager to go. Torres vs Drogba, Lampard vs Gerrard, Chelsea vs Liverpool, players and teams in form, it should be a Super Sunday.
PORTSMOUTH 0-1 EVERTON
Everton are another resurgent team driving towards its rightful place in the league after a bad start. Enough praises cannot be showered at David Moyes for his work at Everton, and it would be a real achievement if he breaks the already structured order of the top 7 considering the resources available. Although they can count themselves very very lucky in this fixture as Pompey were very unlucky to walk away from this game pointless; the least they deserved was three points. Saha took his goal very well, although he took advantage of shocking defending by Kaboul and David James. Dindane had a good debut for his new club Portsmouth and it won’t be long before he start bagging a few premiership goals. I believe the squad is good enough to escape the drop.
STOKE 0-2 MANCHESTER UTD
This game once again highlight the undoubted class of Ryan Giggs. The thirty-something year old midfielder came on to change the game after Nani’s abysmal display. I heard at the beginning of the season, Alex Ferguson sat his 8 midfielders down and said, there are four midfield positions available in the Manchester United starting line-up and it he has no idea which four of the eight to choose, so they have to battle it out. Fletcher has definitely responded to that well, now being the consistent figure in that Manchester united midfield, and put in another masterful display. Scholes, who was at his majestic passing best, to be then joined by the incomparable Ryan Giggs was heaven for Utd. The two were the best two players on the pitch and are true premiership and Manchester Untied Greats. Their performance is the reason why many attend football pitches up and down the country in a game that ended 2-0 to United with Berbatov and O’shea getting the goals. Unlucky Stoke.
BLACKBURN 2-1 ASTON VILLA
Another shocking result of the weekend. Both sides decides deserved something from the game and it was such a poor decision to end the game. Agbonlahor is a striker in luck, as a poor finish find its way to the back of the net. Blackburn will be hoping to make a push up the table from this victory and Villa will see this as an unwanted stumble in their quest to remain amongst the elite in the premiership.
BIRMINGHAM 1-2 BOLTON
2 teams who want to stay miles away from relegation come the business end of the season. This is the type of game they were both looking to win to make that possible. Both teams played well and the Bolton new boy made the difference. Kevin Philips turned back the clock with a well constructed and well taken goal. Birmingham’s defensive record looks good and will do them well as the season progresses, while Bolton want to get to the magic 40 point mark as quick as possible.
TOTTENHAM 5-0 BURNLEY
The Robbie Keane show was aided by some terrible defending, but that is what quality players do, punish you for your mistakes. Jermaine Jenas has walked into the midfield like he has never been away, helping the defensive side of Tottenham’s game. Spurs needed to put the two matches with Chelsea and Manchester United behind them very quickly and they have done it well. Anyone in the top four slips up then they will gladly take the opportunity to steal in with open arms. A whole month unbeaten up until the north London derby looks very likely.
FULHAM 0-1 ARSENAL
The general consensus around and after this match is Arsenal have won ugly. This may be true, with a very good and lucky performance by the keeper Mannone, but Fulham were exceptional and in all honesty deserved something from the game. With Spurs bouncing back after two defeats so well, many would have thought Arsenal would replicate that on Saturday evenings kick-off. This is the kind of victories they need, and if they can get a few of these along with their usual flare and exciting brand of football , they could sustain their top four status. 2 signings needed to win the title. Roy Hodgson continues to work miracles at the cottage.
SUNDERLAND 5-2 WOLVES
Steve Bruce has built a really good premiership team here. Barring injuries, they could be a surprise package this season. Three good strikers, in Bent, Jones and Campbell, they could force their way into the top half of the table. Mensah and Turner are good signings and can form a solid partnership. Wolves on the other hand need to strongly address their centre back situation if they have aspirations of staying in the premiership. Mancienne looks too lightweight, considering the premiership has strikers like Drogba, Adebayor, Jones and on Sundays performance Bent. A consistent performance like that across the season could see him make a genuine push for a ticket to the Republic of South Africa. There are a few players ahead of him but it would mean some good performances in their quest to make the squad!
MANCHESTER CITY 3-1 WEST HAM
Order is once again restored by the blue team in Manchester. An assured performance, with key personnel missing, demonstrating the strength in depth available to Mark Hughes. Santa Cruz got a run out and Petrov staked a claim for a regular starting place. West Ham with their good manager and good squad are quietly losing matches every week. They find themselves in the bottom three while their opponents find themselves disrupting the top four. Tevez has opened his premiership account for his new Manchester club… and the race for next year’s champions league places hots up.
