The Dark Side Of The Wag World

WAG: a term which is now officially part of English vocabulary, in the dictionary and doesn’t have a red line under it when you type it on Microsoft Word, it supposedly means wife and girlfriends of footballers. If you ask me WAG should stand for Wannabe and Gold-digger.

It’s another week and yet again the papers are filled with the infamous sexual liaisons of ex England captain John Terry. Everyday we are informed of new discoveries about Terry’s secret life, and I think the one question we all ask is why do they bother when they know they will get caught? And the answer is this BECAUSE THEY KNOW THEY CAN. Terry like most is worshipped and adored by many, earning a staggering £170,000 a week and lets not forget the extra bonuses he receives from magazine deals, and endorsements from brands such as Samsung and Umbro.

No one can deny that John Terry is an excellent player and even I with my limited football knowledge I won’t deny the obvious. However Terry decided to rest on his laurels and forgot that holding the title Captain is not just an indication of his great footballing skills, but in fact Captain should be a reflection of how you conduct yourself on and OFF the pitch.

What gets to me is when celebrities, footballers, and those in the public eye fail to realise that the minute you receive a cheque from OK! magazine depicting an image of a great husband, father, and all around family man you have no choice but to accept the role model label, and whether Terry likes it or not this is exactly what he is. Capello made the right decision stripping Terry of his captaincy and making a clear example of him that despicable behaviour will not be tolerated and that a privilege such as this should be rightfully earned. The truth is Terry got too big for his Umbro boots.

Clearly forgetting about his humble beginnings as a young lad who dreamed of making it big as a premiership footballer Terry thought he was invincible and who can blame him. Footballers are worshipped and their gigantic pay packets put them on a pedestal which enable them to feel God like. I’m sure Terry had his own heroes that he looked up to and aspired to follow in their footsteps and this is what many young boys see in John Terry a hero. But the last time I checked role models where supposed to set a positive example lying, cheating , and manipulation did not go hand in glove with the position call me old school.

But let’s not give John Terry a hard time and forget about the likes of David Beckham, Ashley Cole, Wayne Rooney, Jermaine Defoe, Sol Campbell Joe Cole and I’m sure the list goes on. Footballers who err play away from home. All of the above cheated on their significant others and excuse the puns played the field and shock horror all forgiven by their “WAGS” but what is it that makes these women take them back? when seedy, sordid tales emerge in the press about their men and their dirty little secrets.

One could understand if the circumstances were one offs, but often the saga of footballers and their cheating ways are more than drunken one night stands. Usually these are instances where affairs have been with numerous women crawling out of rocks to sell their stories, or extensive relationships behind the WAGS back. Unforgivable behaviour that no woman should stand for.

Take David Beckham for example when the story was exposed about his affaire with his PA Rebecca Loos we all gasped “Hang on I thought Posh and Becks were perfect?” we couldn’t believe it, but we knew it was true. Posh turned a blind eye and what grated on us the most was her pathetic reaction. Instead of being angry and showing her vulnerability like most women would, Posh embarked on a weird publicity hungry stunt where we saw her SMILE then we knew it was definitely true. She had clearly forgiven David and seemed desperate as she clutched onto her man even tighter than ever. It was sad and because of her refusal to seem human, the public turned on her even blaming Posh for David straying when she refused to move to Spain.

In the culture of Wagdom we are to believe that being the wife or girlfriend of a footballer is the way forward. Living a fairytale, shopping all day and looking fabulous in furry slippers sipping on champagne and playing the lady of leisure character. Go to any West End club and you will see a trail of young leeches I mean women dressed to the nines and DESPERATE to meet a footballer either to sell their story or meet a potential husband.

Now that the world of the WAGS is being exposed hopefully young girls will begin to realise that it’s all an illusion and the reality of Wagdom is that your partner is often away for long periods of time, and will always be desired by home wreckers who are determined to steal your man. Yet this is what so many women aspire to have and it‘s a sad sad situation.

A survey revealed that 55% of young girls between the age of 14-21 would rather be a WAG or a glamour model rather than a nurse. Here in Britain we’ve created a culture of young girls who feel that having a rich boyfriend and designer hand bag is paramount and somewhere along the line we’ve forgotten to instil the most valuable qualities about what makes a real woman hard work and independence. But in the case of John Terry and his Mrs if I had one piece of advice for her I’d say give him the boot and show him the red card.
